Lesson1-Sentence

Sentence

Objective: 
Students will be able to know about sentence structure and types of sentences. Then they can use these information for writing.

We are going to learn how to write sentence. Writing sentence is a basic skill for writing.

Subject-Verb relationship is very important in every sentence. There are five basic patterns of English sentences.
S-V
Subject-Verb
Usain Bolt runs.
S-V-O
Subject-Verb-Object
She loves her bicycle.
S-V-Adj
Subject-Verb-Adjective
The bad athletes are lazy.
S-V-Adv
Subject-Verb-Adverb
Lionel Messi plays smartly.
S-V-N
Subject-Verb-Noun
He is my teammate.

Using different types of sentences will help emphasize different words or ideas. Here are four types of sentences:






1. Simple Sentence
A sentence with one independent clause. (Independent clause can stand by itself as a complete sentence)
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue) 
- Manny Pacquiao talked to the coach this afternoon.
- Charyl Chappuis exercises every morning.

2. Compound Sentence
A sentence made up of two independent clauses connected to each another with a coordinating conjunction. "FANBOYS":
FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue/ Black=FANBOYS) 
- Lionel Messi and his friends do the football training every day, but they lose in the competition.
They played very well last night, so they won the football match.

3. Complex Sentence
A sentence with one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. (Dependent clause cannot stand by itself)
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue/ dependent clause=underline) 
- Lebron James doesn’t tell his coach that he is going to absent for the training.
- The man who lived in the small building at the corner used to be a marathon runner.

4. Compound-Complex Sentence
A sentence with multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Examples
- Although I like to watch basketball game, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with.
    *Independent clause: "I haven't had the time to go lately"
    *Independent clause: "I haven't found anyone to go with"
    *Dependent clause: "Although I like to watch basketball game... "
