Using different types of sentences will help emphasize different words or ideas. Here are four types of sentences:
1. Simple
Sentence
A sentence with one
independent clause. (Independent clause can stand by itself as a complete
sentence)
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue)
- Manny Pacquiao talked
to the coach this afternoon.
- Charyl Chappuis exercises
every morning.
2. Compound Sentence
A sentence made up of
two independent clauses connected to each another with a
coordinating conjunction. "FANBOYS":
FANBOYS: For, And, Nor,
But, Or, Yet, So
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue/ Black=FANBOYS)
- Lionel Messi and his
friends do the football training every day, but they lose in the
competition.
- They played very well last night, so they
won the football match.
3. Complex Sentence
A sentence with one
independent clause and at least one dependent clause. (Dependent clause cannot stand by itself)
Examples (*S=red/ V=blue/ dependent clause=underline)
- Lebron James doesn’t
tell his coach that he is going to absent for the training.
- The man who
lived in the small building at the corner used to be a marathon runner.
4. Compound-Complex
Sentence
A sentence with
multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Examples
- Although I like to
watch basketball game, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found
anyone to go with.
*Independent clause: "I haven't had the
time to go lately"
*Independent clause: "I haven't found
anyone to go with"
*Dependent clause: "Although I like to watch
basketball game... "
