Paragraph

Objective: 

Students will be able to know about composition of paragraph. Then they can use this information for writing.

Writing a paragraph requires knowing how to write a great topic sentence, using supporting details and finding a strong concluding sentence.

► Composition of paragraph

1. Topic is the subject that the paragraph is about.

Examples

- Usain Bolt

- My favorite sport

2. Topic sentence (Main idea) is a key concept of paragraph. It sums up the writer’s primary message.

Examples

- Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world.

- My favorite sport is Football.

3. Supporting sentence

Supporting sentences contain facts or opinions which guide the reader to understand the main idea clearly. 

• Major supporting sentences are the primary points that support the main idea. 
• Minor supporting sentences are the sentences that support the major supporting sentences.

 

4. Concluding sentence

It summarizes the main idea of the paragraph and restates the topic sentence. The concluding sentence also provides a definite ending point for the paragraph.

Usain Bolt (Topic)

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world (Topic sentence). He won three gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games and becoming the first man in Olympic history to win both the 100-meter and 200-meter races in record times (Supporting sentence). Bolt won his fourth Olympic gold medal in the men's 100-meter race at the 2012 Olympic Games in London (Supporting sentence). Bolt ran the race in 9.63 seconds, a new Olympic record (Supporting sentence). He is the first man in history to set three world records in a single Olympic Games competition (Concluding sentence).
